M underdrive?

All this talk about the 9 speed that gives 4 more between 4 and 5.was there ever a tran kit that gives under drive?something slower than 1st?Acreeper?

There was an option to order a low speed first gear. It was a conventional gear set in the trans.
There are also hydro creeper sets that used either the Belt pulley, and adapter, or the PTO to drive the trans with a geared hydraulic pump for non tillage applications like transplanting and harvesting specialty crops. No reduced speed accessory gear sets were made to my knowledge. Jim

Jim,

Have you forgotten about that gear set that bolts where the belt pulley gearbox goes? A forum member has one on a H. Of course, I might be in error as it could be a speed increaser. But if it is, I'll bet a couple of gears in the housing could be swapped to make it a speed reducer. BTW, it is shiftable to make 10 speeds.

W6 ring and pinion will also increase speed.

Other than the IH Low-Low attachment which requires changing out three gears and the countershaft, the only other ways to slow down a M is to replace it with a SMTA or replace the axles with 660 planetaries and axle housings.

There is an off chance that F560 differential gears w/mainshaft could be modified to work. It would require machine work and possible shaft welding. I don't have a M so I don't let my mind wander over there except in passing.

Wardner the only boxes I know of that you mention only give one other gear between 4 and 5. Main trans needs to be in neutral when used.
Could be something I don't know about though.

Wardner, I have the gearbox you are referring to. It isn't a creeper however, I believe it to be an overdrive. I haven't been able to give it an official test yet but what little experience I have in operating it leads me to believe it is faster than 5th gear.

I am aware, but believed it to be overdrive. The issue with any geared reducer in that position in the gear train is stress on the components coming after it. Planetary hubs are after the fact. Putting planetaries on a conventional tractor would sure slow it down. Jim

Dave,

This is the attachment I was referring to. It belongs to Jason the Red. There are two countershafts in the casting. I am assuming the gears on those shafts can be swapped, left to right, to underdrive the tractor. Or, failing that, maybe all one has to do is rotate the entire gearbox.

I'd like to find one for a SMTA, 400, 450.
