IH Fire Truck?

I came across an older IH fire truck, probably from the 50 or 60's. It has a RD450 in it with 4400 miles. Been sitting out for a while but in really good shape. Anyone know what this might be worth? It work made a really neat rat rod! Thanks, Ray

I'd peek at ebay and see if they have a match. Hemmings Motor News is also an online source to check, or the magazine itself.

If the fire apparatus is in good shape it could be worth quite a bit. The truck by itself isn't worth a whole lot more than it's scrap value. I bought a straight body 40's IH KB-8 last fall for $1000. It's got the Red Diamond 450 in it, and the engine in it will likely go to scrap. The little I've run it I can tell it is a GAS HOG. Planning to swap in a nice little Cummins one of these days.

I handled the advertising and bidding for 3 IH fire trucks for our local fire company over the years. Generally, the fire apparatus pump and body do not add much, if anything to the price of the truck, except for a very narrow segment of fire apparatus collectors.

Most fire apparatus collectors want custom cab trucks, not commercial chassis fire trucks. In many cases, the fire body is just something that the buyer has to deal with removing and disposing of.

If you want an older IH truck, buying an old fire truck may be an inexpensive way to get a truck chassis with low mileage.

I bought a 1967 International fire truck right out of the dept. garage in 1998. Ran good, and fully equipped with fire fighting gear. I paid $1400 for it on sealed bids. 25,000 miles. Lost compression on a few cylinders (549? ci) about 2005, and I sold it with a bad motor for $1000. Supposedly went to some firetruck collector/museum in Iowa.
