B414 glow plugsSTILL NO GO

I am at my wits end. I have the glow plugs out and wired on a board. When I hit the glow switch the indicator goes white hot in 3-5 seconds but the glow plugs are just starting to heat, not even red. I see a different indicator for cold weather applications, could I have the wrong indicator? Please someone help. Don from Canada

FIAT parts on-line shows the glowplugs as # AG28 and the resistor/indicator ASSEMBLY as part # 706685R92, and the replacement resistor COIL ONLY as part # 3043619R1.

Any of those numbers math up with what you have?

I am willing to bet you have a mis-match of glowplugs and resistor/indicator, PROBABLY have a resistor/indicator for a tractor with lower-current glowplugs.

Well, this is just memory from many years ago on a BD144 in a TD5 and I reserve the right to be wrong.

The indicator and glow plugs were in series and were what I will call a "balanced" system. You need all 5 resistances in series (the indicator and the 4 glow plugs) or you will burn one out.

The indicator should reasonably indicate how hot the plugs are by the color of the element. If you are white hot, your resistances are not correct. Do you have a glow plug shorted? Are all of the correct resistance?

The glow plugs and indicator will be rather low resistance but grab your meter and ohm each one indivdually. Compare the readings to see if one is way out of range with the others.

The other way to do it is to compare voltage drops across each plug (including the indicator as it is a seperate resistance). While heating, put your meter leads, one on the input wire to the plug and one on the output. Read the volts doing the same to each. All should be approx the same reading.

like i said before that indicator is the resistor/indicator if its not the right one your glow plugs well burn up. i think i have a couple used one here if you want i well check see if they are any good one out of a 500 other td5

I think you have the wrong resistor unit. I often test the system like you have done and the 4 glow plugs and the resistor unit all heat up at the same time and the same heat. The resistor takes 6 volts and the glow plugs take 1.5 volts adding up to 12 volts.

Hello Ben, I have an IH 500D Dozer with the BD154 engine.
The connection to the glow plug indicator loosened up this spring, I replaced the wiring, but when put back together the Indicator coil shorted to the case and burnt up. The glow plugs are Champion CH28s .9V at 40 amps, Therefore the indicator unit takes about 8v at 40amps. It has about 4 loops and the center of the indicator is pointed to the indicator window. If you have one please let me know. email: [email protected] phone 607 426 6497. thanks Carl
