How hard is it to replace the Starter Drive gear? When I look this part number (the gear that engages the ring gear) up on the internet parts store it looks like it is on a twisted thread. Does it just slide off the armature shaft? I split this tractor a couple of years ago and turned the ring gear over but didn"t have enough smarts at the time to know the drive gear should have been replaced at the same time. When that job was finished there still was some grinding but was told that was normal. I hoping I will not have to split the tractor again.

Bend the tabs that lock the set screws and they will turn out letting the Bendiz slide off the shaft. Keep tract of the washers used on the armature shaft. Easy fix. There will be a core charge on the old Bendix so take it along.

You want to replace the entire starter drive, not just the gear. It comes off as gene says. Easy.

Get the updated "clutch" style starter drive if you can. From a local parts place, not ebay.
