Large holes in grill of 52 Super M

I have a 1952 Super M SN L-500154 and it has the grill with the two big holes on it. We"ve had it since 1960. Does that mean that the first owner replaced it with a Super M-TA grill in the 50"s?

Sorry the tag on front is hiding the rest.

It probably means the previous owner needed to replace the grill and he went to the dealer. The dealer would only have the SMTA grill to order as the others were obsolete.

I did the same thing with a '47 Cub in 1970. They sold me the four bar grill (first available in 1959) because it was the latest one to fit my Cub sheetmetal. The earlier grills were no longer available.

I agree with Wardner that your grill was probably replaced and all of the SM parts department replacement grills had the additional holes. Some of the late 1952 SM's may have had that grill from the factory but yours is a early model, the 154th Louisvlle SM built.

I was also was told that the first owner had turned in over and it has not had any body work that I can find so I figure they got a new grill and maybe even a hood too. That would have been in the late 50's

I think that comment answers your question pretty easily. Judging by the picture the gas tank must have something going on? The hood and grill match perfectly and it appears the rest of the tractor match them, but the gas tank is an oddball color.

He could have also had a new cultivator and an older tractor. Switching grills would allow that.

BTW, you could probably replace that $500 grill with the correct grill and put $400 in your pocket.

More BTW. The hood on that tractor will only fit a M or SM. It is about 1.5" too short to fit a SMTA.

There was one listed on CL and YT for $700. That doesn't mean anybody bought it though...

Saturday a grill like that sold on E Bay for $1226.00 The seller had it listed as an M/SUPER M grill. I think there were over 50 bidders.

Reminds me of the old saying..or is it from Bible.. "A fool and his money shall soon part."

I am friends with a fellow who bought a "Super M" grill sight unseen from a guy in MO. IIRC it was relatively reasonable. Like $200 for a really nice straight grill, including shipping. He opened the box and was furious because they sent him a SMTA grill. He called the guy back and the guy offered to exchange it for shipping. My buddy declined bc it still fit his SM and he "didn't want to waste all that money on shipping" (not bc he was handed a gold mine) He still doesn't believe me he could sell that one and buy 2-3 good regular grills.
