Just playing around with posting pictures. Here is one of a dirty air cleaner I took apart some time ago. As you can see, no other way to get one like this squeaky clean but take it all apart.

I have a question that i hope you can answer, I just took apart my Farmall 460 oil bath cleaner and the little air vent thingy at the top is bent over / pinched off. just like someone took a plyers and bent it in half and pinced it together. why would this have been done/is that normal? also on my 460 can i take the wire mesh out the same as you have pictured by removing that bottom metal peice? if so how do i go about removing that bottom metal peice? it looked like one solid unit to me so i flushed it with gas to clean it out (hopefully that was ok!) Thanks for any help!

You can see that connection is pinched off on this air cleaner also and is the best thing to do with it and put a plug in valve cover. Far as taking it apart, drill out the spot welds and if you can't get onto the spot welds on the center tube, use a tiny chisel and cut them off. You can resolder them back into place. Time consuming but you will get it clean. You have to be careful to get the mesh to fit properly when putting it back in. I actually used two pop cans taped together for the center . Worked good. Solid pipe correct size works better. The reason I take some apart is that I have fought with these air cleaners for over 50 years. You can steam clean, hot power wash, solovent wash and soak and blow with air until you turn green, then take it apart and see all you left behind. The worse is corn leaves, they get in along the sides and form channels for dirt to go right on through. Have fun.
