IH 460 utility TA Delete

I would not expect this part to be available at your local CaseIH dealer. You will probably need to salvage it off another 460 Utility that has the delete shaft.

The TA in your tractor is probably the original. That means it's lasted for about 50 years.

The tractor's "busy years" are long behind it. There's no way you'll ever use the tractor as much as it was designed to be used.

Get the TA fixed, adjust it once in a while, and it will outlast you. When it's working properly, you'll really come to appreciate it.

If you really really insist, you can remove the access cover and weld up the planetary gears. That will permanently disable the TA, essentially making it a TA delete.

I'm wondering if this is what a previous owner has done. The TA lever is missing and I can't adjust the clutch enough to get it to disengage.

The problem I'm trying to get past is that I can't shift if I stop the tractor under load. If I just replace the TA clutch would that likely allow me to continue to use the tractor soley in the high side, but get around my shifting problems? (provided the planetaries weren"t welded"

No, if the TA were shot, you'd be able to shift even if it were welded solid.

The fact that it "jams up" means that the ramp and rollers aren't completely shot, if I'm not mistaken.

There may just be something wrong with the TA clutch or its pressure plate such that it's not releasing. That may in fact be why the TA lever was removed...

The nice thing about replacing the TA clutch is it can be done with a single split. Replacing the whole TA requires splitting the tractor in two places, and removing the center section...

Here is something else I have done to one 560 and it worked out ok. I gave it a single split between ta housing and rear housing. Then pulled the output shaft out of the ta and discarded the rollers from the ramp. You can easily put the out put shaft back in again with out the rollers. What cannot be done is to replace the rollers doing it that way and that is why you have to do a two split, complete tear down to replace the ramp and rollers. By leaving the rollers out you solve rollback problem, use direct drive only and shift easy. .

I had problems with my F504 binding in gear when stopped. I found my linkages were out of adjustment. After I worked with my adjustments and got both clutches set it works fine.

I use my TA more as a split axle than a power booster. Meaning if I'm bush hogging I use it to slow down in rough spots and in turns. Originally they were designed to give a lower gear for heavy draft loads (plow, disk, ect) In normal use we will never put that kind of load on a TA, especially not on a daily basis.

I'd try to rebuild if required and find a handle.

Thanks for this idea when I get it apart again over the weekend I want to have as many options available as possible. I'll show my ignorance of TA's here and ask what may be a dumb question. If I install a TA elimination kit or otherwise disable the planetaries, does the TA clutch have to operate? Looking at the exploded view in the manual I was thinking that it did not, but now I'm unsure

Before you get all hot-and-bothered about installing a "TA elimination kit" or welding up the gears, figure out why the clutch isn't releasing.

Welding the gears won't fix the problem you're having right now.

Either the linkage is totally out of adjustment, or there is something broke in the TA clutch.

Fix the TA clutch, and your TA will probably work just fine, judging by its current behavior.

Thanks for the thoughts on this - I'm not in a hurry to do a TA delete, I'm just trying to find the lowest cost way to get the tractor shifting. I use it primarily as a loader and the binding problem requires that I slip it out of gear while still moving ( a good trick when trying to take a big scoop!) Looking through the inspection plate the TA Clutch is completely rusted and frozen. I'm fully willing to change it, I was just concerned that I'd spend the money on it and then still be looking at a TA rebuild.

When I had the tractor split at the engine clutch, the rear half would roll back. just fine After I recoupled it and made sure the engine clutch was disengaging properly, it would no longet roll back even with the clutch pushed in. You can hear a metallic click and it just locks up. Does that tell you anything? Thanks
