It would be a serious undertaking to put an 86 series cab on a 56 series tractor. When the cab design was changed the seat and controls were all moved forward. That is why the fuel tank is behind the cab. The center frame section was changed to allow cab and clutch mounts (later changed to mounting on the cab) and the axle housings were changed to allow cab mount on them. The auxiliary hydraulic valves were relocated to under the right side of the cab and are smaller in size.

It would be a lot of work but there would be relatively little modification necessary. The 1256 and 1086 are both based on the original 706/806 platform. All the major components are in the same places.

The way I would do it, I would strip everything off the platform of the 1256, from the fuel tank on back. Install the cab complete with all the controls, and hook everything up.

There's no practical way to install the cab and retain the 56-series controls. As Owen said, they moved the operator's platform forward on the 86 series.

The steering column on an 86 is where the fuel tank is on the 56. The seat on a 56 is where the fuel tank is on an 86.

The only way you could mount the cab and keep the 56 series controls would be to hang the cab off the rear of the tractor by about 18". That would put the doors smack between the rear wheels.

I replaced a cab on a 1486 that had rolled over. Wasn't hurt much but due to liability issues, and insurance co etc. We sold that damaged cab to someone else and he had it installed on a I believe 1066. I never did get to see it but he said it was a lot of work but in the end he was satisfied.

It would be interesting to see what he did.

I've seen some pretty interesting ideas for "cabs" over the years, and the owners were "satisfied." One neighbor farmer built a wooden cab on his CaseIH 1494 that looked like a clubhouse built by children. He thought it was the best thing since sliced bread, and was quite proud of his work.
