(quoted from post at 13:03:52 04/03/11) What is the purpose for the two large holes in the SMTA Grill that are not present in the M or SM Grill?
That`s where the eye bolts for cultivator braces went through.

I thought the cultivator attached to the small holes near the middle of the grill like on a SM. I'm talking about the large holes toward the outside of the grill that only the very late SM and SMTA's have.

Bud, There was a new style upper cultivator brace that bolted on the upper steering bolster that came out in `53 or so. I have that style on my Stage 2 Super H, but it`s not quite as big as the brace for the SM or SMTA. These brackets were hidden behind the grill instead of the earlier version which were bolted on the outside of the grill.

Here's the bracket. The SMTA, F400, F450, and SH, F300, and F350 used it. The grill comes off and the bracket attaches to the upper bolster. Grill goes back on and the cultivator attaches to bracket with the 3/4" bolts passing through the large holes in grill.

I bought this bracket on eBay because it has to be good for other attachments although I don't have anything in mind at the moment.

Might be wrong about how the bracket attaches. I suppose it could attach on the outside of grill. Matter-of-fact, I think I like that better.

This is probably why we don't see many of them. They were too easy to remove.

edit: I am now thinking they mounted outside the grill on the SMTA and inside on the F400, etc.

Wardner,

What are you currently using your pictured front fast hitch for and how do those new red lift arms attach to the hitch frame? I admire all of your modifications and consider you a modern day Rube Goldberg of the antique IHC tractor world. Always looking to see more of your work.

It attachces on the inside of both grill types

Harold,

The lift arms attach to front bolster. There is a keyed torsion bar that ties them together and runs underneath the bolster.

The Front Fast Hitch currently has a forklift mast on it. It's been working as a rough terrain man-lift. The back of tractor has a 50hp high pressure washer.

Wardner,

I believe you about have that tractor loaded down with; the rear sprayer, the front hitch and forklift, and two generators.

The front bracket is used to attach braces to five row middlebusters as well as cultivators.

I have a 1952 Super M SN L-500154 and it has the grill with the two big holes on it. We"ve had it since 1960. Does that mean that the first owner replaced it with a Super M-TA grill in the 50"s?
