newly aquired 686 bogging down and shutting off.....

Well I took a leap after reading up on 686's and brought one home, or rather tried too. It is an international diesel and it ran great on the road for an hour. Then it started to bog down and sputter like it was running out of fuel then it quit. It wouldn't restart until it had sat for 5 minutes or so. Then it would run just fine for 5 minutes and then do the whole thing over again, sputter, surge then die. Five minutes later, start right up and purr again. It is parked in the farm yard of the last place it died at, still an hour from my place. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks in advance for any help.

Filter/s plugged up, Fuel cap vent plugged, fuel sediment bowl and passage to tank plugged up.
First determine if the fuel is flowing from the sediment bowl in a solid stream, If not fix it there.
Then look at the cap, It must vent or the vacuum will not allow fuel delivery.
Then the filters, but be warned, it will take pulling it down the road no faster than the gear you are in, and no TA, after bleeding the filters to get the air out of it. Be careful, or get experienced help, this is not a big problem. Jim

Its probably a fuel supply problem. Look inside the tank with a flash light and see if there is dirt or some thing eles in there. Then change the fuel filters or try to open the drian valve on the bottom of the filters and see if there might be water in them. It sounds like its starving for fuel. Erik..

Thank you so much for the prompt replies! I will inspect the tank for obstructions, try the bleeder screws on the filters, make sure the fuel cap is venting, trouble shoot for obstructions in the lines, look at/clean the sediment bowl, and replace the filters last. I have a question about towing the tractor to bleed the system Jim. Do you just fill up the new filters with fuel and then tow the tractor in gear with the system all closed up? Or do you have the fuel lines cracked some where like the injecters?
Thanks,
Zac Mathes

I would replace the fuel filters regardless. IMHO you definately have a fuel delivery issue. On a Diesel, the fuel filters are the one thing you should NEVER skimp on.........

Thanks for the clarification Jim. I will get my neighbor to pull me with his tractor. I am borrowing a truck and trailer to go fetch the tractor in two days. I can't wait to get it home and in good shape.

Thank you for the advise Tom. I will make sure to put new filters on. The nearest International/ Case
dealer is a bit of a drive away from me. Is there a place you guys order filters online and are there filters that are best? Also, I'd like to order manuals for this tractor, but it appears there are choices out there. What are the preferred books?
