Farmall h starting problem

I have a 1950 H. it was running great and starting perfectly until last week when it started running rough. Pulled the spark plugs and they were pretty well fouled and covered in carbon. so today i replaced the spark plugs and put in a tune up kit while i was at. At first i had done the point adjustment wrong and the tractor turned over great but would not start and i realized my mistake. so i fixed the point adjustment. but now when i hit the starter button there is nothing? not even a click that the starter is engaging. Any ideas??? this is a 12 volt battery with a distributor. any help is appreciated!

Hello,

I am sure that when you did your tune up on the tractor you didnt make anything not work. My guess is that if you are not getting any power at the starter is that your starter switch has gone bad. I would check that first. The tractor will turn over no matter if the points are or are not set correctly. More like a antique car and not a modern day car tractors have a independent starting system that is not hooked to the same area as the kill switch or ignition (usually). I would check the starter switch then if that doesnt fix it rock the tractor back and forth a little and make sure that your starter is not stuck. If you were cranking on it for long periods of time either on of the things that I have said could happen. Also check the battery to make sure there is a charge in it also and that it has not run down to far to turn the tractor over. You also may have a starter issue not very common but does happen. They are expensive to replace I would check the other parts first. If you have any questions let me know. Feel free to send me a email and I will try to answer your questions. I have a couple Hs a few MDs a WD6 a F20 and a few more red tractors. Jason

If the lights work, Turn them on, put something in front of them so you can see their brightness, then hit the starter. If they dim way down the starter is jammed in the flywheel. Put it in high gear and rock the rear tires forward and back violently. Watch the fan if it moves, it is unstuck. If it does not, loosen the starter bolts and wiggle the starter till it clicks. That will make it work (for a while) It needs a new style starter drive, with no big spring on it.
If the lights do not turn on, or go all the way out instantly, the battery cables are loose on the battery, or where grounded, or where attached to the Starter Switch, or starter. (several styles of switch are used, so I can"t point to it) Jim

Check to see if the motor will turn over. If you have some bad spots on your ring gear the starter drive can jam up against the ring gear and lock up everything. If that's the case just loosen up the starter enough to get the drive loose, move the motor a bit and reattach the starter. I've got 3 that does that at least once per year. I'm going to have to fix some ring gears one of these days. If this isn't the answer and your battery is good then its probably the starter button. They don't seem to last, especially if they sit out side.

First start at the battery, Check all connections then check ground. Then check switch.
Keep working toward the starter.

My 48 H does that sometimes and it is the starter button. I usually just keep hitting it and it will kick in. My starter button is either dirty or wore out. First job this spring to fix.

Are you sure the starter isnt locked to the ring gear. What type of sw are you using are all the connections clean and tight and are you sure the cables are good on both ends. Do you have 12v with a meter when you enguage the start sw.
