Well we need a better number, The serial numbers are shown to the left, select farmall, then scroll to SM, then look.
The 122,XXX range is too high for the farmall plant in the Chicago area, and too low for Louisville. Check it again. Jim

I had looked at the serial numbers to the left and found that they didn't match the super M numbers. The numbers I've listed above are correct-- that's what is on the plate.

Maybe it has been modified/ changed. It certainly has the super M decals. It has power steering and two-way hydraulics--

I don't have an M to compare it to. Any other ways to figure out if it really is just an M? Thanks for the help.

Look at the brakes if they are sheet metal covered it is an M. Look at the engine block casting dates. (the meaning is on the search for archives) all should be in the 1953 54 range (it is probably a hybred of more than one tractor. Probably not a SM if it is FBK on the serial plate All SM tractors had SM on the plate.
A piston kit to make an M have the engine size of a SM is still not an SM. The live hydro could mean anything, as the changover is not too hard. Decals can change a Plain Jane six cylinder Mustang into a California Special from several feet away.
I hope the tractor is a SM but it is not looking good. Jim

Looked at the numbers on the engine, despite the snowstorm. I've got 2-16- P That looks like 1947, If I'm figuring that right. The engine also says 6722DJ. I guess it's an M with some super decals? Oh well.

Simply stated, I think you lose. That stinks. Actually SM's didn't come with 2 way hydraulics or power steering. They were both add on things.

I would not be to upset other than the higher speed gearing and a little more power no real difference between M and Stage I Super M actually I think the disk brakes were a step down fron M brakes. Any M that has been used to farm with has had more than one engine overhaul and was probaly upgraded. In cotton country we usually had to overhaul engine in 3 to 5 years probaly 4500 to 7500 hours.
