MD tranny update - culprit found

Finally got everything apart on the MD last night. And what do I find but a really chewed up bolt in the bottom of the case which took out the constant mesh gear. Bolt size matched with one of the bolts holding on belt pulley delete plate. When I got the tractor, it had a plate made of sheet metal which I replaced with a new steel one. (I swear I did not drop anything into the transmission.) My "theory" is that since I started the tractor on a cold day, the grease was thick enough that it carried the bolt up and lodged in the gears. Does this sound feasible? The good news is, nothing else was damaged; bearings and all other gears look great. The trans. lube had no metal in it. Just thought everyone would like to know. The failure was manmade, not mechanical.

Seems to me some one mentioned that was a posibility(maybe me) or I may have just thought that and didn't respond as felt others had it covered. I have seen this happen before but it was usually a roller out of the pilot bearing.

Thanks for informing us of the outcome. Quite often we just go off into the future and never know the disposition of the problem. Good find. Jim

IIRC they mentioned a roller pulling up with the gear lube, no mention of random bolts.

Or if anybody even read the responses...

Thanks again for replying. Today must be a great day for that. I see we get an update about the 450 with the random ball in the bottom of the rear end.

A chip off of 2nd gear lodged in the same place as yours did on the SMTA. That was cold weather--pushing snow when it happened.
