Thinking about buying a used 1586 and just wonder if it is a good choice. I know any used tractor may have issues but wonder if this model is known for major problems.
Thanks

I've had one for awhile....lots of power and great traction. There was an issue about oil not getting to some final drive gears..a design flaw that the local dealer fixed by grinding a channel. Not sure how it was done.,but our's is fine.

The bearing failure issue on the 15 series was the ball bearing used on the drop gear from diff to planetery. Two on each side, one up and one down. We replaced many of those ball bearings with a bower flat roller and never saw one of those bearing fail. I believe the roller was used in the 4568 and was approved by IH for use in the row crop tractors.

I never owned one,but i think they are pretty decent tractors. I believe they have the dt436 engine? possibly 466.. The 1586 also only has a 3 speed gear box.The 786-1486 had a 4 speed. Not sure why they did this

They have a dt466. cavitation on the sleeves can be a problem even in a low hr one. If it has a water conditioner/filter on it (right side engine at front-looks like an oil filter) and it was replaced regularily that was supposed to reduce cavitation, They only had 3 gears because of the heavier rear end than the 1486's Nice tractor

My BIL who is almost legendary for abusing equipment has one. He got it in very nice shape about 14 years ago and has used it as his heavy work/tillage tractor sense then. He took out one of the bearings they were talking about and his mechanic son replaced both sides. Engine is just now starting to get a little weak. It's been a real good tractor for him.
It's getting a reman engine this months before spring work starts.

Only down side of the tractor that I can remember is being a 3 speed tans instead of a 4 . Dad worked at the local IH dealer when they came out and he always said that was the onle down side. Good Luck, Kenny

Not a bad tractor but I would take a 66 series any day over the 86. I have been around both 66 series runs, rides, shifts better and is easier to work on.

The 1566 had a DT436, I'd guess the 1586 did too. The gears are helical cut in the 15's instead of straight cut like in the smaller models. They also don't slide the gears, they have a synchronizer-type set-up, a coller slides over a set of dogs on the gears to engage them. A wider collar on the 2nd gear would help a 1566, as it was hard to find 2nd sometimes. I don't know if a 1586 uses the same part or not.

They are not a good haying tractor. The step from 1st to 2nd gear is bigger than the 4 speed tractors. If you run a diskbine with it you can easily be too fast or too slow. They are good for the chopper but that's the only thing we did with ours besides tillage.
