digital tach again

For those of you that read my earlier message my tach is showing all sorts of numbers that have no reason. Pulled the tach out and the "regulator" chip is missing out of the back - thinking this is my problem - any ideas where to get one?

There were different ones for different models and they carried IH part numbers. If you can't get one from IH you will have to get ahold of the repair facilities. I don't have their address off hand.

Even with a regulator, the tach is likely to have issues with a very noisy (electrical EMI) tractor. Some will work, others will just show the bizarre spiking in the electrical system. A 300MFD capacitor on the power lead to ground might work. Put a 100 ohm resistor across it to discharge it when stopped. Jim

Most of them have an LM317T and/ or a generic 5-volt regulator --7805. These are a 3-lead regulator with numbers on the front face.
You probably should replace the power supply input electrolytic capacitor on the board while you're into it. Should be labeled 20 to maybe 100 MFD. at 25 to 50 volts--again, locally available.

I'm thinking of a different tach. Data center on 86 series IH is is what I was refering to. Didn't check who posted question as a similar post was on a while back .

Hi -

To answer your question --

If Brownie 450 is right about the regulator type, check with Radio Shack. I know I've bought LM317T's there before, and I think 7805's as well. If they don't have it, www.digikey.com will.
