Lock washers should not be used next to cast iron. They are designed to bite into the metal and cast iron is too brittle. The lock washer will cause the cast iron to chip. Flat washers are used next to cast to keep the face of the bolt head from damaging the cast iron surface. If you are going to use a lock washer on cast iron you need to use a flat washer against the cast iron and then put the lock washer between the flat washer and the bolt head.

No washers. The correct nuts for head studs have a flat machined on one side that acts almost like a flat washer, but it is part of the nut. So, if you have the correct nuts for this, they are directional when you put them on.
