Super C Front Bolster

I have a Super C that is pretty hard to turn. I have replaced all the u-joints on the steering shaft and it is still hard to turn. I was looking on the bolster today and it has some plugs in it were it looks like it might take oil. Are these oil filled?

Jack up the front end to see if you can spin the wheel stop to stop, it should turn easy, if not then you more then likely have a bearing out in the front.

and yes the front bolster is designed for oil, but personally if its that hard to turn now i would not think oil would bring it back.

Your bolsrt needs some new parts. Drop the front spindle with the wheels. Then you can split the bottom off by removing the bolts holding the two haves together. Then you can replace the bearings, seals and fill with 90wt it will steer like power steering.

MUSSEL UP! And welcome to the 1940's and 1950's and to a certain extent the 1960's. You do not have power steering. First, you have to learn to turn while the tractor is moving. Forget turning when sitting still. When you get good, you can use the weight of the rear implement to lift the front just enough so that you can spin the wheel to turn or straighten up. There may be nothing wrong but learning how to drive the old unit. If you jack it up and it turns easily, there is nothing wrong.

When you rebuild the steering gearbox, use corn head grease instead of gear oil for lube. It will not run out the bottom seal like oil does. Even if you are extra careful when re-assembling.

Thanks to all the responses besides Lmack. I got it tore apart and the bearings are shot. There was actually water in it. Going to order parts tomorrow. If it don't turn any easier I'll try to get Lmack to give me some lessons on driving a tractor.

If you replace the bushings and seals the 90wt will not leak I have 6 running around that i have rebuilt with no leaks sure makes them steer better.

Don't use corn head grease if you rebuild it. If it leaks, then you might want to try corn head grease.
