My dad passed away recently. THE NEXT DAY, my brother used the 706 to blow snow out of the folks yard, but didnt get far. I remember Dad having trouble getting the 706 into gear on many occations. Now there is nothing F/R. I am wondering about linkage. I've been told about linkage pins wearing out, yet where do we start? Thankfully we have the 300 which dad loved to use for everything anyway.....

2 things that I know of that will cause that. Could be condensation build up thats not allowing the TA engage or the clutch (water plugging filters). Or the clutch. My 1206 did that this winter. Had just put a bale in the feeder and was driving back to park....clutch let go. So clutch kit with clutch, pressure plate, pilot bearing and throw out bearing plus rear engine seal, new I PTO shaft and seal kit. About 700 in parts with resurfacing the flywheel.

If it acts jammed and will not move it is stuck in two gears. Check the linkage. You have to cuss at any 06 66 86 series for them to shift properly!:^)

Start by pulling up the platform. Your problem lies underneath.

Odds are pretty good that the problem is a sheared-off roll pin in the lever on top of the range cover.

You need to pound out the roll pin and replace it. If the hole is worn badly, you may want to drill it out to the next size larger and use a larger roll pin.

Find a second roll pin that fits tightly inside the first and pound it inside the first pin after you've finished installing that first pin. That will reinforce the pin and make it take another 30 years to shear off again, instead of 20.

The reason the pins break is because people try to force the tractor into gear, rather than using a little "finesse." If it doesn't slip in, they pull harder. If it still won't go, they start jamming the lever back and forth.
