Correct wide front for a SM

They switched to tie rods behind in 54, so more correct wide front would be tie rods in front. I have a late Super MD (stage II) factory wide front, tie rods in front.

Live Hyd? I saw a '52 at auction this weekend with battery under seat. I'm guessing it was a convienience upgrade rather than factory.

December 1952 for Super M's, only. Maybe, but Super H's are my specialty.

The Stage II Super H's didn't start until late 1953.

Super H did not become stage 2 until late 53, I have one. AND the the 1st Super H did not appear until 1953.

The adjustable wide front axle attachment with fixed wheel base(steering rods in rear)made available for SMTA tractors, was also made available for use on M, MD, SM, SMD farmall tractors effective 5-27-54. Frame rail drilling diagram was included in the wide front attachment number 360400R91.

(quoted from post at 13:03:44 03/28/11) Very late 52's (Dec) were the start of the Stage II super's be it Super H or Super M.

That's why I wondered. I can't recall seeing a Stage II SMD and was wondering if they were the same package as an M. The under seat battery box with belly pump made it a hybrid of sorts. I'm sure the serial number and casting codes would tell the rest of the story.

Thanks.

We were talking about this a little while back and none of knew for sure. My SM LP (NJ) with WFE has the one with the tie rods in back so it must have been added later.

If the tractor was still at a dealer unsold in 1954, the dealer could install the wide front with tie rods in rear before the tractor was sold. Last stage 2 tractors were built in early 54, so a few were still available for sale.
Stage 2 SM were first built in march 1953.
For the SMTA a adjustable wheel base wide front attachment was still available for use. Tie rods in front.

NO, the Super H did not appear until mid 1953. The H was still being produced up to that point.

I don't hsve the breakdown between Stage I & Stage II SMDs but there were a total of 5,199 built according to Guy Fay's book "International Harvester Tractor Data Book". According to Mr Fay the SMD was discontinued on2/1/1954.

There were 4 or 5 Stage II SMDs in this area back in the day & I know of at least two still in the area waiting to be restored.
