460 utility transmission/ final drive binding problems

I have a 1959 460 utility gas, no TA, no reverser. Tractor binds when under load and will not allow shifting until load is released. Just finised replacing all clutch components. Clutch operates normally, can shift up and down easily when not under load. When bound I can use the bucket to raise the front of the tractor off the ground and then it will shift. Anybody have any ideas where to start? Thanks, Mark

Sure sounds like a TA in there to me keeping gears from rolling back free. Might it be someone removed the external linkage to TA and did not delete it or do you mean the TA is just not working. The TA direct drive clutch has to be released for tractor roll back to occur.

You raise an interesting point - I assumed I had no TA since there is no external lever in place. The clutch linkage has the arm that the TA would attach to but there is nothing connected on the bottom. I didn't notice a pivot point on the case where a lever would have been removed, but maybe I wasn't looking closely enough. Would a tractor without a TA still have that same clutch linkage configuration?

Configuration is the same. TA and clutch both have to be adjusted correctly. My guess is you are missing the lever.

Thanks for the information - very helpful. I gather from these forums that the TA's go out on the bottom side often. Is it a problem to continue to use it in the direct drive mode?

No problem to use high side only except for you shifting out of gear problem. What I would do is take a look at the TA drive clutch through that top little four bolt cover and see if it is all intact. If it is you could just put the short linkage between TA clutch and main clutch and adjust it so TA clutch releases when pushing in main clutch. If some internal parts have been removed or clutch or planeterys welded or bolted solid you won't be able to do anything except major repair. I should say, utility may present problems getting at that cover, row crops are easy, not sure.

Got the cover off over the weekend. TA Clutch looks like it hasn't been released since I was in grade school. Hard to see much through the little cover but throw out looks shot, and cant get enough adjustment out of the linkage to move the forks far enough. Here's my next question - If I resplit it and replace just the TA clutch and components - would that be enough to cure my shifting problems? I don't need the TA for what I use the tractor for and would rather not replace it if I don't have to. Thanks
