I am approaching the finish-line of my rebuild. I went to put number 1 at tdc so I could adjust the valves and could not find any marks on the pulley. The pulley had greese and some paint on so I cleaned it off. Problem is at one time the guard under the crank pulley was pushed up into the pulley and it wore off the stamped TDC mark. The pulley still has all the degree marks and the v and r stamped on it but the TDC mark is gone. The head is on and torgued down but the pan is still off. How do I find TDC? Can I count back on the dergee marks to locate TDC? Which degree is would it be and from which letter?

With the valve cover off, watch the valves on # 6 As the ex closes & in starts to open it is TDC on #1. Rock it back & forth a little & you will be close. After it is running you may have to fine tune it.

Top dead center usually had a little ball so you may still be able to find an indentation where that was located. Otherwise, like you said , count back from any number you can identify like 10 or 20 or what ever. If you still have pan off, you can get withing a couple of degrees by observing the piston and rod from underneath. The correct time to make the mark was with the head off and by using a dial indicator on piston head. You make a mark on pulley when piston is like .001 from top coming up and .001 from top on the way down. Then make a tdc mark in the exact middle of those two marks.
