I'm having no luck on the 400s I'm buying. My "55" needs a head gasket. I found #1 piston is deteriorated on top at the low side of the step. It's low enough to see compr. ring. All other pistons look good. I don't know if I should use it. Is it ok to take a piston out of "54" and install it to replace bad piston? Do I just need to crosshatch cylinder and install new rings? Harvick just made an awesome move to Win! Thanks Tim

you should be ok doing that as long as the bore is the same etc wrist pin diameter also i would think it would be just fine

Why not buy just one new piston and a set of rings?. Head gaskets are also readily available, as well as complete, valve grind gasket sets.

I'm not fixing the first 400 I got cause the block deck is real bad and one sleeve is pitted at crush area. I thought I would utilize the parts.

I put used pistons in F30 motors and in my 10-20 and W30. cause you cant buy new ones. New sleeves are now available for these motors but I have reused lots of old ones. Hone the sleeves and put new rings on them old jugs and they work just fine.

"Just do an overhaul."

That's fine and dandy if you're made of money. Just the overhaul kit is $726.71 on this website. Plus machine work on the head. Plus machine work on the crank. Plus machine work on the block if the deck is warped. Plus any tools you have to buy or rent.

By the time all is said and done, you're looking at $1500-$2000, and that's if you do most of the work yourself.

For what? So the tractor can sit out in the weather, pull a wood trailer, push some snow, maybe plow a garden, and take the grandkids for a ride once in a while?

You don't need a fresh engine for that.

As long as the used piston is the same as the other three, and nothing is rattling around when you put it together, you can't make things any worse than they already are. It's worth a try.

Just about what I'm gonna do with it. I have 5
acres and most is grass. How much more am I gonna
do with that. The treat is owning something that
kept my ancestors fed including myself. I take
pride in keeping the past alive. What do ya think
Farmer would do if he had some good used parts.
I'll fix it and overhaul it when all parts are worn
out.
