I have a h with a wobbly steering. It seems to me all the play come from the gears on top. Question I have is will it help to replace the gears or wont it help? If it does how does the bigger gear come out? thanks adam

Check the big nut on the front end TIGHT. Check the two collars and set screws on the pillar TIGHT. Check u-joints and center bushings not "sloppy". See what you have then. If that top gear , not the worm, is a 360 degree gear , turning it 180 dgrees might help.

Is there a trick to getting off the top gear? It wiggles but I cant get it off . It should just pop up I would think. Thanks adam

I got mine off easy by removing the top nut, then just cranking the worm gear back and forth; the flat steering gear worked right up and off.
I removed the slop in my H in the shed, by fabricating a 3/16" thick spacer, and installing it between the worm gear bearing and and the worm gear. (had to grind some of the rear part of the gear off.)That moves the worm gear 3/16" rearward related to the steering gear. It works in the shed, takes most of the slop out, but I Ihaven't tried it on the road yet.
It might not work ont he road.

Lift the front end of the tractor off the groung. Unbolt the bolster, drop the center shaft out the bottom, that will help in getting the top gear off. Next and most inportant step, replace both the upper and lower bushing on the vertical shaft. put in new seal and fill with gear lube after it is together. I have done this on all 5 of my tractors huge difference in how the tractor drives. I can run in road gear with just one hand on the wheel. When you put the top gear back in if it is a round gear rotate it half a turn. This will move it from the wore spot it will have. good luck.
