C rear axles--paint or no paint

I'm about to get to the painting stage on a Farmall C that I'm restoring and was wondering if the rear axles were originally painted at the factory. I know that on some row crop tractors, they were left unpainted to allow the rear wheels to move, but didn't know about the Farmalls. I'm pretty much a green and yellow fan and this is the first red one for me.

I think most were painted red from the factory reason being I don't think they took much time to tape off and think do look good red, some guys do paint them black and that looks good to kind of a personal likeing good luck.

They were originally left unpainted. When we restore ours, we sand them down completely, and then give them a coat of flat black. It keeps the rust away and looks good too.

They were not painted red or any color at the factory. IHC slipped a cardboard tube over them when painting the tractor to keep the paint off of them.

When tractors were repainted by the dealers at the time, the axles were usually painted black to cover the red overspray.

Out of Louisville, they were obviously not red. Not black either. Looks like unpainted. Cosmoline, linseed oil, something like that to prevent the rust might be best if original is what you are after.

I don't know, but suspect they were Parkerized from the factory. That would give the black coloring, prevent rust for a long time and not interfere with adjusting the wheels.

Thanks fellas for the good info and the super pic. I didn't think that they would have been painted, but, like some of you, have seen many of them with red axles, so thought I should ask. I will probably leave them unpainted or go with a flat black. Haven't made up my mind yet.
