Loud Grating/Grind Noise Not Starting-1972 IH 454 Diesel

Attempting to start tractor. Won't start and the very loud grating noise starts about a second after turning the key. Where should I start looking for the problem? Second choice? Thanks

We need way more info.
What happened the last time it was operated?
Has it been doing this off and on?
Is the battery charged up.
Does the engine turn at all (looking at the fan)?
Is the noise at the starter or engine?
Is the clutch pushed in when this happens?
Jim

Last Time I started the engine-Same sound but only a short time, not as loud .

Not doing it off and on. Just the last time and now, but it's much worse now and won't start.

Battery is fully charged and I put a charger on between times I tried to start.

Not sure about engine turning, but don't think so.

I can't tell if noise is at the starter or engine, but seems to be in vicinity of starter.

Yes, clutch is in.

as an educated guess it sounds as if the starter drive is not engaging with the ring gear, causing that grinding noise. can you pull the starter off and have a look at the drive and see how the teeth look on it and check ring gear also.

I agree wit rustred. My guess is starter not engaging ring gear, worse case is teeth stripped off ring gear right where the start is at now.

Any way you can coast/pull start it, or at least pull it a few feet to advance the ring gear, perhaps the start will grab then? That will prove if it's the ring gear or starter.

Thanks for the information. If the starter, I know how to change that but the ring gear is something I'm not familiar with. My mechanical skills are very limited so I assume the ring gear is something that will require a mechanic. Can you give me a rough idea of what such a repair will cost? Thanks again for all your help.

If you take the starter out, you will be looking in at the ring gear (in the hole). if it has been made unusable there will be less than 60% of the tooth length remaining. The stripping sound is likely the starter drive gnashing teeth with that gear. The engine only stops in two places when it is shut off, and as a result those places get the most wear.
If it has no history of the noise, it is 80% likely to be OK with a new starter drive, (New style with no big spring). Putting brushes in it, and new bushings is a good idea. Jim

Your starter may not have the new style drive, but a new drive is called for, as is cleaning the components and using some PTFE spray (Tri-Flow is one brand) on moving parts. Jim

If the ring gear is bad, that requires that the tractor be split in half to access the flywheel at the rear of the engine.

The clutch and pressure plate needs to be removed, then the flywheel.

The ring gear wraps around the flywheel, and is a shrink fit. The old gear needs to be cut off with an acetylene torch. The new gear is heated and dropped on to the flywheel.

While you're in there, you may need to have the flywheel resurfaced. You may need to replace the clutch and pressure plate. You may need to replace the IPTO drive gear. You may need to replace some seals.

It sounds like you may want to have this service performed by a mechanic. Splitting a tractor is a pretty advanced task.
