farmall 460

got a 460 that i built a puller out of. put in a 301 out a 715 combine and a new button clutch and pressure plate that was supposed to have heavier springs for the extra power. took it to a pull today and tried it in 3rd gear and it wouldnt pull off. went to second and the same thing. put it in first and it took off but and it pulled in first gear and didnt slip and spun the tires in 5000 and 5500 lb classes. would you think the pressure plate is not strong enough to pull off in those other gears or what could be the problem.

You replaced the main clutch, what about the TA clutch? You made not mention if your 460 tractor has a TA or not. Their is a small 7 inch clutch in the TA drive that has to lock up when you are in direct drive. There also is a heavy duty version of this clutch.

Very possible. We do not know what you have done to the engine, but a high performance PP and disk might be called for. The Flywheel depth must be correct (distance between the clutch mounting flange and the friction surface). If it is wrong (Too deep) the PP will not pinch the Driven plat adequately. Jim

when we put the clutch and pressure plate onto the flywheel we had to pull it up with the bolts cause it seemed like it had some strong springs in it but it wont move the sled but in 1st gear.

You have to pull all of them up with the three bolts to get them installed, built or stock. Stupid question, but did you remember to take ALL of them out?
IMO it should grab in 2nd and 3rd even with a stock clutch. With that said, you never said what type of class you were pulling in. In a "farm" class at a fair or local pull I have seen many take off in 2nd or more. I know not all of them have big clutches. If you are pulling in a LLSS class, then yes, it will probably slip the clutch (if it doesn't snuff out the tractor)

first of all i didnt ask for your smart remarks and if that is all the info you can give me i dont need it. it is just a antique 7 mph class and if you would have read in the last post that it is just a stock 301 engine.

(quoted from post at 17:11:23 03/26/11)...put in a 301 out a 715 combine and a new button clutch and pressure plate that was supposed to have heavier springs for the extra power...

No, you said you put a combine motor in it. You never said you did or didn't build it.
They were not smart comments, I was being serious. You could easily forgot to take one of those little bolts out and you can't (easily) install any clutch without putting the bolts in.

First off I didn't see any smart remarks, second, what he is talking about is that you normally use three bolts to "cap" the pressure plate for ease of bolting to flywheel and it has happened that some one will forget to take those three bolts out after clutch is fully installed. This of course will cause a slipping clutch. Nothing to get too excited about. If you have correct depth of flywheel recess and correct disc the finger should lay nearly parallel to flywheel. If they are out away from flywheel you are not getting full tension on plate.
