Super A seeps oil

I just purchased a 1948 Super A. Had not run in about 3 years. Tank was very clean, she turned over using the fan belt all the way around. Had anti freeze in her. Put a battery in it, clean gas, pulled the starter rod, choked it and away she puttered. Sounds good, but oil is seeping slightly between the block and head. Gasket ??? No easy solution ??? Thanks

Sounds like bad rings and a leaky head gasket. Pour some kerosene in the cylinders and let it soak for a while. Maybe it will free up the rings if they're stuck. As for the head gasket, well if if it's good and it probably isn't, you could put some red silicone on it and try it again, or just get a new head gasket which would be the better deal.

Don't forget to change the oil if the kerosene seeps into the oil pan.

Ran my B for over a year while mowing with a seep like you describe, pulled the valve cover and rocker arms off and retorqued it and no more leak! That would be my first step. My problem is I didn't re-torque it after I put the head back on.

80 ft-lbs is the recommended. You've had it warm, so go ahead and draw it down. Pattern is to start somewhere in the middle and work your way clockwise around the studs so that the end effect is that you're alternating ends, working out from the middle.

If it's terribly slack to start with (like under 65 ft-lbs) it wouldn't hurt to run it to warm a couple of times, and check them again after it's cooled back down. Abit of a pain in the neck becasue it means removing thte rocker and re-running the valves, but if lack of pressure on the head is the reason for the seep aroud the gasket, it will be small effort and expense for an easy fix.

If it's good oil, drain the pan and keep it in a clean jug and then put it back in when you are done with your soaking.
