F 12 magneto question

Tried starting our 37 f12, which does have an f14 conversion kit, today. The motor turns over with good compression. We tried pull starting it. The motor turned over briefly, then locked up. We were able to free it up, then tried again. We noticed that as soon as the magneto lever was adjusted, it caused the motor to lock up. If the magneto is seized up from sitting the last 30 years, will that cause the motor to lock up? Can the magneto be rebuilt or should we be looking for another?

If the mag is seized up the drive connector will break instantly when the motor is turned. If that motors been sitting for 30 years its probably not the mag seizing it up. Did you pull the valve cover and check the valve train? Oil the cylinders? Clean the carb and fuel pump? Old break shoes and rusted up rear ends could be draggin in a pull start.
Mags are rebuilt all the time, yours probably needs it if it sat that long. Couple guys on here do em.

We did check the valves, all in good working order and oiled the cylider. carb and pump also ok. Brake shoes could be the problem, but the motor seems to lock up when the magneto was engaged. I need to pull the brake covers and check that out. Thanks.

The mag is always "engaged" moving the spark lever just grounds out the points.
Does the impulse trip on the mag?

Ive had the weights in the magneto on my F12 get wedged against the housing because of worn pins. I had to swap out the impulse assembly for one that had been repaired in the past. So like 36F30 was saying Id be willing to bet your mag needs to be rebuilt.

What do you do to get it unlocked? If the mag is timed too early it will kick back & make it look like it locks up.

It appears that it is locking up. The wheels will stop turning and then if you try to crank it by hand, you can't turn it at all. We are able to back it off with a cheater pipe a the clutch and transmission joint. I thought it might be a brake shoe sticking, but it rolls freely in neutral.
