I am trying to get my starter back together after resoldering but How do I keep the springs open to get the brushes over the armature? It won"t go on all the way and I can"t figure it out. thanks

If you put 3 in and tilt it at a slight angle it works. It took me almost an hour of fiddling around and a few choice words later but i got it. I'l also heard other ways but can't remember the best. I'm sure others will chime in with what works best.

This has worked for me: Push each brush as far into the holder as it will go. Then temporarily secure each one in place with a thin nylon zip tie.

Once the armature is installed simply snip and remove the zip ties - the brushes will drop neatly onto the commutator.

Just stand it on it"s head in a vise completely assembled except for the end plate with brushs. Set the end plate on at an angle, first couple of brushs will be down on armature a little and then just pull next brush out with a screwdriver. You may have to go around a couple of times but no big deal. After a few hundred starters it will come easier. Oh, some what orient the location pin to start with.
