Hey,guys,

I have been reading several pieces of advise on here. But need more input. My steering gear box is leaking 90wt around where the steering shaft goes into the box.(NOT where the BIG shaft comes out of the bottom of the bolster.)All of the shafts feel tight in their bearings.but after adding 90wt to bring it up to "full",it is running out of where the shaft from the steering wheel enters the box.my thought is to take it all apart, cleant it,check for wear, replace parts, reseal, and regrease. But,WHAT do i fill it with,90wt,140 wt,pack it with bearing grease???(I keep hearing these storys of them STILL leaking 90 wt AFTER re bushing/re sealing the box.(By the way, this is on my Farmall Super M. It has a factory wide front end.NO power steering,NO front end loader.)

You can use 90 or 140, the seal should do it. If not you can use normal grease, some use cornhead grease which is thicker than oil, but thinner than regular grease.

I have found STP or similar products work well. Still liquid enough to keep gears lubed yet thick enough not to leak out.

i rebuilt the bolster on my h and filled it up with gear oil, it has not leaked yet, its been a about a year

I had the same trouble with oil leaking out even after I put in a new oil seal, from then on I have packed the gears with grease.

there is a press in bushing on the top steering input shaft. also check the steering shaft for a groove worn in it. for a rebuild, carter and gruenenwald cgn.com sells a kit, has all the bearings, bushings and seals for a front end overhaul, about 160 dollars. like cnks said, you can use corn head grease in them too. your local john deere dealer sells it.
