SA front main seal

Well....looks like I will be replacing the front main seal on my 49 SA. Have a puller etc as well as the IT manual and some reproduction SA manuals. Appears that the pulley is pressed on and not held in place by a bolt. Is that correct? And if so, what holds it in place? Manuals say it is "pressed" on. I am trying to imagine what that looks like, as I do not intend to pull the motor, and picture myself trying to force this thing back in place with a carefully placed bottle jack or port-a-power. Sign me hopeful. I have looked in the archives and found some useful information but nothing very detailed. Any information that might save me some time or aggravation would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

There are many posts.
The pulley must be forced off with a puller that contacts the entire back side of the pulley (bearing splitter works well) the puller is often made with 5/8 all thread and a hydraulic jack or porta power for force. Warming the pulley helps, but just with propane, not Oxy-acetylene. Putting it on can use threaded rod into the cover main bolts and pushing straight with a socket or bearing pushing puck to make circular contact.
Modest polishing of the snout and pulley are appropriate (do not make it loose) Make sure the new seal has a clean place to seal, and not in a grove from the old seal. Do not heat it to put it on, it could ruin the seal. Speedy sleeve and seal is a solution for grooved shank. Good luck.

Here's a puller someone on this forum made for pulling a Cub damper pulley. BigDog and John both made them. Hal

Here's a sketch to make a puller you need to check the dimensions. Use 3/4 allthread. Any metal shop can make this. They can now punch those holes. Hal

Thanks all. Great pic. I will get back to the archives and try to find that thread. I have a large bearing splitter and I am hopeful it will do the job. I must say I am still a little surprised that the pulley is held in place by magic, but maybe I won't be once I get down to pulling it. I will post the outcome.

You will need to heat it in an oven when reinstalling. Be sure to check the damper hub for a worn groove from the old seal. You may need a speedi-sleeve to cover that area. Hal

I used a bearing separator and a standard puller. Also, I did not need heat to reinstall. Mine has a hole in the crank that accepts a bolt. Was able to pull it all the way in. Don't know how many have that hole, but mine does. A much easier job than nearly all the posts on this forum say.
