H still wont start

If it acts like it seizes up, the timing is too far ahead. What do you mean by vapor lock? That happens on a hot engine on a hot day.

Basically it locks up when I try to choke it. It stops whirling over immediately with a puff of smoke back through the carb. I have advanced and retarded the timing and there was no change.

The timing or plug wire order in the cap is not correct. There are many posts describing the process of finding #1 and setting TDC. then putting the wires in correctly. If it has had trauma to the cam drive gears in the front it could be that there is further issues driving the failure to start. Internally jumped timing is very possible. If when put in time at the distributor, it changes, suspect that. Jim

Are you getting any fire to your sparkplugs? Did you pull the distributor? You may not have the distributor timed on the correct stroke. Hal

(quoted from post at 22:38:41 03/22/11) Could it be a problem with the advancing springs or weights in the distributor?

No, those don't even come into play until the engine is running at a high RPM.

Has the engine ever run? Check the easy things
your plug wires should be in this firing order on the distributor cap. Hal

2-1
4-3 As the rotor rotaes CW.

If this is connected right remove No1 sparkplug near the radiator and bring that piston to TDC on the compression stroke. Hold your thumb over the plug hole while a helper hand cranks the engine until you feel pressure against your thumb.

Once you feel pressure drop a plastic straw on top of the piston and watch the straw rise as the engine is slowly cranked. When the straw quits rising you should be at TDC on the compression stroke. Then remove the distributor cap and see where the rotor is pointing. You need to provide more info as to whether you have fire to your plugs, getting gas to the carburetor. Saying it won't start isn't much help. Hal

He had an earlier thread where he went over a bunch of that stuff.

It's all good. You can't watch them all. This would be a great time to rant about how if everybody used the new forum there would be no need for people to start a new thread just to get noticed. All you would have to do is post and it would go straight to the top no matter how many years old it was...but I will only rant that much

Here's the link to the other thread

I went back and read your earlier posting. You should hold your hand over the throat of the carburetor and see if you have good suction while a helper cranks over the engine with the starter. Hal
PS: Poor suction means you have low intake manifold vacuum. Could have a leak somewhere or
you may have low compression.

(quoted from post at 15:26:49 03/23/11) It is running again! Which new forum are you talking about?

If you go in the upper right hand corner there is a "Classic View" or "Modern View" selection. You will see the opposite selection as the one you are using. It is kind of hidden so not a lot of guys use the modern view. It wouldn't do you any good bc so many people still use the crappy...I mean Classic View that you would never get noticed.

I would like to see the "modern view" set as the default, and for those who prefer "classic", they could make that choice after they are logged in.
