What in Sam Hill is a foot decelerator?

I see this term used from time to time in this forum and Red Power magazine... Such-and-such tractor came with a "foot decelerator."

Last I checked you used brakes to decelerate. So, why isn't it called a foot BRAKE?

If it's not a brake, then what is it? They didn't have "Jake brakes" in the 1940's and besides, Jake brakes don't work on gas engines, and the engine technology of the time wouldn't take the strain.

It slows down the engine momentarily, and as soon as you take your foot off, the engine returns to the original speed.

Lots of construction equipment uses both a hand throttle and a foot pedal. The foot pedal is actually a decelerator instead of an accelerator. You set the hand throttle to wide open, then use the foot pedal to decelerate the machine. This can be used for switching from forward to reverse, or to slow down the engine speed around objects or whatever.

Most older Cats would run at full trottle at all times when working. You used the decelerator to slow engine to reverse direction, then up to full speed again. Saved you from having to use the hand trottle all the time, or having to press on the accelerator all the time.

Just as the name implies if you are using a tractor or more commonly a bulldozer you have the throttle set wide open and use the foot decelerator to slow the engine while being able to keep your hands free for shifting and operating hydraulics at the same time

Also used on many 4 wh drive tractors to reduce rpm's when engaging the clutch like when starting out with a load rather than resetting throttle each time.

Yup,The HD-21 powershift with the V-12 Detroit had one and the problem was at the end of the day?? When you jumped in the pick up to go home often i would forget and let off the gas thinking i would speed up. Bud.

Used to run a 440 Allis with a decelerator worked good when comming up at the end of the feild push on this pedal and the engene would come down to idle to turn and let off the pedal it would come back up to full throttle and never touched the throttle itself.

On the Rice Field Special tractors (WR9, WDR9, Super WDR9, and WR9S) the foot decellerator was used primarly to cross the numerous levees in the rice field. The operator would often be standing, though some preferred to remain seated, and at each levee crossing he would depress the decellerator to slow the tractor, then, as soon as he was across the levee, he would let up on the decellerator and the tractor would resume its normal preset speed.
