Loud 666 tractor

Hello,
This is the first time I"ve posted on this forum. I have been spoiled to the quietness of newer tractors for awhile now. Recently, I have been running an old 666 hydro diesel tractor on my dads farm and I can"t get over how dang loud the thing is. We have other tractors with 2 and 3 times the HP and are 2 and 3 times quieter. Ha Ha! I just thought I would throw this out there and see if anybody had any suggestions. Any special engine servicing that would quiet this sucker down? Valves? If not, I have a pair of Noisebuster muffs on order either way! Thanks

Tractors have got considerbly quieter over thr years. The 666 is from the early 70's. Does it have a proper muffler or straight pipe? Kent

The stock muffler is oval in section and near 35" tall in the body. If yours looks different than that (google IH 666) it could be the issue. Automotive mufflers for many cars are stainless steel and if the inlet were correct would make quiet happen. I would not worry too much about flow, as the automobile that has that inlet size would also have a much larger volume of displacement from RPM. I have hearing loss from Farmalls, so I am a believer in quiet. Jim

As others have mentioned check out the muffler. As far as I am concerned hearing protection is a must with any cabless tractor. Oh, and if your 666 has a Year-Round or Hiniker cab that is worse than no cab.

It does have the Hiniker cab, which definately makes it worse. As far as the muffler goes, the noise doesn't come from the exhaust, it's right from the engine itself. The exhaust noise is not bad at all. We also have a cabless 666 that is very loud in the same way. Although it is quieter to operate being it doesn't have the cab. But no kidding, ear plugs and muffs with 32 rating and my ears are still ringing when I'm done. We have a 1066 with a cab that is much quieter, the difference is huge even standing next to the tractors when running. The 666 is just loud. I've heard the Noisebuster muffs cut out alot of the engine noise. Anybody use them? Thanks so much for the replies.
