MD tranny cover questions

Made a little progress getting ready for tranny cover removal. Hit a stumbling block - about half the bolts that hold the cover on are rounded off, so no wrench is going to turn them. Only thing I can see to do is break the heads off, pull cover, and then try to get the rest of the bolts out. Any advice appreciated. Do brake covers need removing? Two cap screws that hold them on also go into the side of the top cover. If you take these out, is that sufficient?

Just a thought did you try a good pair of vice grips? If you want to twist the head off you might try to see if the vice grips would get em out then if they dont grind two sides down very caefully and get a good flat edge for either vice grips or maybe a smaller sized socket. I think I beat the vice grips to death but it's what popped in my head. Good luck

try driving a metric socket over the bolts, works sometimes, usually those bolts come out fairly easy, drive socket down over bolt head with hammer.

Lay a heavy grade 5, 1/2" nut on each. Use a stick welder, or wire feed, to weld them to the round head. This does two things it thermal shocks the shanks, and provides a easy location to wrench on them. If it twists off, it will be either at the weld, or the bolt head. Jim

Same thing here.

Also, try using a 6 point socket. Sometimes a 6 point with work when the bolts are too rounded for a 12 point to work.
