oldtanker

Friend has a 42 H that has a distributer and has been converted to 12 volt. It needs timed. Anything I should know before I go over there and try to figure it out? I've never time an old tractor before.....never had one to time.

Thanks

Rick

you can time the engine with just a test lite. remove #1 spark plug, crank engine over to compression stroke. locate timing marks on crankshaft balancer. bring the first notch up to the pointer. you will now be at tdc. hook test lite to battery power and use wire from coil to distributor for ground. with points closed, lite will lite. rotate distributor slightly till lite goes out. tighten everything down. should be good to go. from there you can start engine and set timing by ear.

Set the points to .020" on the high point of the distributor cam. Set the front timing mark (pulley and cover) to the last mark on the pulley in the direction of rotation (TDC) Adjust the timing by turning the distributor so that the points just break at that spot. This is the timing. If the springs and weights of the centrifugal advance are working the advance will be just fine. Jim

Between Jim & Glen they use different marks. I am not sure which is right. One mark lines up the grease fitting on the flywheel pilot bearing. The other is to time it. Anybody else know?

i just peeked in the owners manual for my h. it says crank engine over until the first notch on the drive pulley is in line with the pointer. this is with a magneto type ignition, but should be about the same for a distributor, you can get an initial timing point to get the tractor started. then fine tune by ear, or, if you have a timing light with an adjustable advance, and you know what advance weights are in the distributor, you can use the timing light to time accordingly. the notch to grease the pilot bearing is a ways around the pulley, look for a single notch by itself.

If there is more than one mark, the last mark to come by the pointer is the most retarded (TDC).
The other marks are for advance (TTBOMK)

Set the points and timing marks as noted below. Loosen the distributor mounting bolts and turn the distributor body an inch or so clockwise (while looking at it from the cap side). Pull the coil wire out of the cap and hold it near a ground (the distributor body). Turn on the ignition. Rotate the distributor body back counterclockwise. When you get a spark it is in time. Tighten the distributor mounting bolts.
