I unlaoded my 52 H at a local show today. While it was idling I was stowing away the chains and the engine RPMs raced. I ran and killed the ignition switch. It will start but there is an audible clank!!! Any suggestions on where to start? Thank you.

Pete: I'd start by removing the governor cover for a peek inside.

Could be a governor weight or pin has broken which would cause the engine to race. It could also be the source of the clanking sound when the engine is cranked.

Tyler: A broken governor spring will cause the engine stay at idle, not to race.

Had the carb off lately? Seen this happen if you don't get the fork on the throttle shaft over the governor rod correctly.
If this is the case, I fear the worst for your engine.

i would bet you sucked in a screw from the carb. and the throttle plate is misplaced -- first thing is to take off the carb. and look-if that is what happened --take out the spark plugs and look in the hole to see if you can get the screw out thru the hole or you will end up pulling the head-fix the carb as necessary -- did that and been there!
