F 4 Magneto

Initial problem---weak spark. Compleatly disambled and cleaned all parts. Put new wire from points to condensor (soldered ends) cond checks good, coil checks good, recharged horseshoe magnet and put back together. Now, no fire at all. What am I missing?? Set points at .015 and degreased all with alcohol. Could I have put the magnet on backwards?? Forgot which side was where. I put the IHC on the magnet towards the IHC on the mag body. 6 hrs and worse than when I started. Most probably something simple, but will look at again in the morning, but do not know what I would do different. Any advice would be appreciated. THanks in advance. JIM in ILL.

The magnet works either way. Make sure that the "Points Cup" is not rotated all the way CCW (from driver's seat) and grounding out-that is the way IHC designed them to kill the engine.

When I rebuild a F-4 Mag, I usually put in a new coil and condensor. This results in a 3/8 inch spark.

Coils and condensors are available from this site and from Rice Equipment.

Thanks for the tips. Carbon rods intact. Timing marks lines up properly. I have rebuilt these before, but this is the first one that went dead on me. One thing I can not remember, is the armature magnetized like other mags, with a N S pole? My last one I worked on was a H4 and the armature was magnetized. Maybe the F4 arm is not. I am by no means an expert, but am stumped with this one. Thanks again. jim

The IHC is showing when the mag is on the tractor, but it will spark either way. Take the point cap off & try again. If no spark, hold the button on the mag & if it is dead, you have the primary grounded.(take off the top cover to do this)

Thanks. Forgot to mention that point cover was on OK. I tried advanced and retarded and in between. The reason that I did not put in a new coil is that I have one on hand but it checked the same as the one in the mag. The condensor took and charge and held it and then would discharge like it should. Will look it over again but it seems like I am doing the same things over with no results. jim

First of all THANKS to all who responded to my post. Found the problem!!!!!! When I reattched the wire from the points to the condensor, the lug was touching the mag cover and shorting it out. I knew (or felt) it was something simple, but I will not forget this. Again thanks for the responses and help. The things you learn the hard way, you tend to remember. JIM
