I want to make a gasket for the front retaining
ring. If I remove the front packing gland, can I
reinstall with not having to replace it? Does the
packing come off first then the big nut then the
retaining ring? Is this simple? Got the new
Radiator and painted it red. Awesome!
 
You don't need a gasket there. No water gets to that point anyway. If water is coming up through there it's through the center tube. That piece keeps the bearings in the center and holds the oil seal.
