magneto vs coil

I AM REPAIRING A sw6ta MOTOR THAT HAS HIGH COMPRESSION PISTONS . I HAVE THE OPTION OF INSTALLING EITHER THE MAGNETO OR COIL DISTRIBUTOR. IS ONE BETTER THAN THE OTHER?

No, not necessarily. But given a choice on a hight compression engine with 12 volt battery I'd go with the battery coil distributor.

To my knowledge, the magneto does not have auto spark advance while the distributor does.
I too would go with the distributor.

There is one advantage to a point/coil, that is the centrifugal advance system fund on the distributor, but not a stock mag. Race magnetos could be adapted to provide radical voltage and advance, but the stock mags do not allow advance. Once they are started they go to full advance. That doesn't work well at idle or medium speeds for best economy or power. Jim

Ditto what everybody said with one note. If you are 12 volt, then yes, 100% agree. If you are 6 volt, I would probably go with the mag. voltage drop when cranking reduces spark in a distributor system. Not so with a magneto.

I personally like magnetos, but I am not suping up any of my tractors. No matter what condition the battery is, the mag starts. period.

For higher performance setups (ie. a pulling beast), and the 12V systems, I would absolutely agree on the distributor. When it is 10 degrees outside, your mag is the better starter.

So, decide which better fits what you intend to do with the tractor when done. General work or show, mag. Pulling or full blown work horse, distributor. As always, IMHO.
