What went wrong on MD?

It was a nice day to start the MD, so I fired it up. Started easily, ran nice for 2 minutes on gas, then a clunk clunk sound and abruptly stopped. The sound seemed to come from the front of the transmission, just about where the trans. shaft starts. I shifted thru all gears, all seems normal. Jacked the tractor up; wheel turned freely. Held clutch down and tried to turn trans. shaft, which I could reach since it has no belly pump in it. I was able to free up trans. shaft - seems to turn OK now.Tractor now turns over normally. I did not try to restart tractor (I'm afraid to), but suspect something bad happened. Transmission never gave a hint of trouble before. What could have gone wrong? Any answers much appreciated, and sorry for long post.

Anything that locks up the engine and has its origin in the trans needs to be tended to before operating. I, however, would start the engine. Starting it now can eliminate that whole end of the tractor. Block down the clutch so it cannot put power through the trans. If nothing else it will put 45% of your mind at ease. (maybe 65%)
the next step is to analyze the trans. Some components can be seen through the belt pulley mount (or plate if your lucky and do not have a pulley drive on it) looking for damaged gears and or bearings out of place or showing wear metal or grief. I assume it was in neutral. As such it will have the constant mesh gear in action driving the counter shaft, and the intermediate bearing (between the input shaft and the output shaft), as well as the front bearing in action. If nothing is found, and even if it is, it will probably require taking off the trans top to fix it. Jim

Thanks, Jim, I'll proceed with your suggestion. Tractor does not have a belt pulley, so removing the delete plate is easy. I've had this part open before, and everything (at that time, a year ago) looked OK as far as I could see. I'll take a look again. If the top plate has to come off, I'll probably hire it done. Thanks for input.

maybe the ice but i'm thinking unless the hole rear end is in water instead of lube i'm guessing not! but maybe. try looking at your gear mesh. alot of times on farmall when puting them in gear they like to go in 2 diff gears and that will kill the tractor dead and even bust a gear or 2

Simalar thing happened on my M at one time before I owned it, a ball bearing dropped out of the bull gear went through the bull and pinion gear broke into pieces and laid in the bottom of the rear end for who knows how long then one cool morning I started the M and the thick gear lube carried a piece of bearing into the gear on the input shaft it wedged between the teeth everytime the clutch was let out it would clunk clunk clunk an old farmer told me" on a farmall M everytime it makes a clunk in the rearend or trans it's money, stop and pull the top plate and see what the noise is" when the piece went in between the gears it took out the input bearing

The MD I am restoring am getting ready to pull the top deck plate off. All the bolts come lose but two. Been putting diesel fuel on them. I am scared on what I will see inside. Thinking it is the reason it was parked how many years ago.

Diesel fuel won't loosen anything. Get some pro loosening stuff, PB Blasteror "Loosenall" . ATF and acetone is the best.

Hire me to do it, it is super easy. It take a long time, but it is simple. If I were to do it on my MD I would build a stand to prop up the fuel tank so I don't have to remove it completely. All those lines and bleeding them is a PITA.

I don't have a better suggestion than what is listed. I would have thought a clutch bearing, but that wouldn't kill the tractor. If it did it while you are moving it isn't in two gears. Hold the clutch in and start it on gas. That will isolate that area.

Thanks for your offer. This was really nagging me so I went out after supper, blocked down the clutch, started the tractor, let it run a few minutes. Motor is fine. Finally got up enough courage to get on the tractor and shift thru the gears. No bad sounds. All good there. Gingerly let the clutch out and backed up about 5 feet. No bad sounds. Tried all forward gears. All seems fine.
Used the tractor all last fall some work and shows.
No problems whatsoever. Parked it in barn for winter. Then today, I start it and tranny locks up. I don't get it. Will investigate further.

Hmm, I would leave it sit and pop the rear plug and take a splash of oil out. I know the stuff in my MD is the weirdest looking stuff I have ever seen. It looks like the stuff from the Canadian oil sands. There may just be some water/ice in there.

I was out taking some hay to the cows with my SM one night, and the left wheel stopped like the brake locked. Backed up, still locked. It would turn almost a revolution of the tire. Drug it into the shed, there was a tooth off a bull gear stuck in the bull gear, when it came around it jammed the gears. Never found where it came from, the transmission was rebuilt about 15 to 20 years prior, and it must have been in there yet from then.
