Starter rebuild

Need to have the starter rebuilt in my 886 with the D360 in it. Was qouted $225.00 at one of the shops. It has been a long time since I have had a starter of this size rebuilt, but I was thinking about half that. Talk about sticker shock. Anyway anyone have one rebuilt recently, what did you pay?

If you hadn't noticed, the price of fuel and raw materials has shot through the roof lately. Everyone's using that as an excuse to double their prices.

That's the only starter shop in the area right? If so, you've got three choices:

1. Pay his price.
2. Buy a new or reman starter from the CaseIH dealer.
3. Park the tractor.

Another option, buy a new starter from steiner online, I saw starters for an H yesterday for $158. Part number, IHS244
You might check to sese if they are made in China.
Good luck!

NAPA actually carries quite a few electrical items for the smaller tractors. Not sure how many they get into for the bigger ones.

Called a shop about 50 miles from me & they were quite a bit cheaper than the local shop. Plus they have a guy that works for them who lives not too far away that I can drop off & pick up at.

Sounds like a shop that is easy to do business with! You don't see service like that everywhere now days.

Flat rate for removing and reinstalling the starter is 1.0 hrs.

With the starter brought to the shop:
Complete overhaul is 2.3 hrs.
Replace field coils add .8 hrs.
Replace brushes only is .6 hrs.

If they replace the starter drive and solenoid along with the other small parts the bill could easily reach $225. Rebuilt from dealer is $400 - $450.

Never get rid of an original starter if at all possible. Have it repaired. You will never get an original back. Some of those rebuilts have been off and on so many machines with all differnt kinds of parts , machined ends of shafts for undersize bushings, you name it. I have had so many guys bring a starter in for a minor repair but it was a rebuilt so could not find proper parts. Those armatures have been cut down so many times there is no material left on them. Some have resoldered bars which rarely work out for long. A couple hundred dollars to repair one like that is not all that bad.
