504: need a power steering pump

I bought a 504 diesel last year that had a power steering unit for some other model on it. I would like to find the one that is supposed to be on the 504, but have been having trouble locating one. Was wondering if any of you guys might have any leads. Thanks.

My 504 uses the hydraulics of the tractor to steer through the torque generator. The TG is below the steering wheel and multiplies the steering wheel force through the steering shaft to the steering box. I believe mine was OEM narrow front converted with a Speeco WFE.

If yours has a seperate PS pump, where does it go? Does it go to a cylinder controlled by a steering valve?

Charles,

It may be that he has a stripped tractor that was never shipped with factory hydraulics.

I run my 504G PS and TG with a C pump. It requires that the frame be notched about 1/8" with a grinder to fit. Doubt if a Diesel has the opening at right front of engine.

The tractor came with original torque generator. Which goes just below the steering wheel and runs off the tractors hydraulics like you described. But it was broken. So the owner before me installed something that doesn't belong on this tractor.

If the torque generator is broken and the OEM PS was disabled, what is there now? Usually a belt driven pump goes to a steering valve and a cylinder. I have seen some creative steering setups.

I can find some part numbers for the TG, I know it is a Charr-Lynn. I know they are not cheap new or used. The hardest part may be the steering shafts and u-joints. The u-joints are about $75 each and the shafts may or may not be available. My steering shafts/couplings/u-joints are sloppy and worn. I happened to find a guy parting a 504 and bought the entire steering shaft assy. This was a non-PS tractor, but the shafts were the same. I did buy a soft kit to repair my TG, its leaking.

I'll get back with more info.

OEM PS? The part inside the power steering unit that is broken is Called the power end drive. The teeth on the gear have broken off.

"Power End Drive"? Is that at the steering wheel or the front axle? My 504 has a "power drive" below the steering wheel that turns the shafts all the way down to the steering box above the axle. Is this how your tractor was before modification?

I apologize, the part that is broken is called the CONTROL END DRIVE. And it is located inside the power steering pump. If you have the shop manual for 504, It's # 10 in fig. IH1318B
