H PTO Question

I have friend that has a H that had the small diameter PTO. He got a large diameter PTO unit he was going to install.

The large unit is a couple of inches shorter than the small PTO. I haven't looked at it yet but wondering what's going on?

I thought they were all the same length, just the output diameter was different.

He brought the units over for me to take a look.

Wondering if one is for an M or something? Or they used a different set up in the later H's?

They rusty one supposedly came out of a H.But the pilot shaft is larger than the one he took out.

Unfortunately you will need to change the transmission counter shaft to accept the newer style PTO unit.

There were three different style PTOs used in the H transmission. The one you took out is the first style. The other one you have is the third type. The transmission counter shaft changed when the went from the first to the second style. You will notice that the original one has a two dog engagement clutch and the later one is a spline type coupler. The second type unit used the spline counter shaft but still was the same length and size output as the original type.

Clean one is an early style with the "dog" type of drive connection. The rusty one is the later version (stronger drive) and requires transmission drive changes to use. I have converted from the old style to the newer one and it just takes time.

There was also an adaptor to install new style to old shaft but you would be hard pressed to find one. It was a short piece with dog on one end and spline on other.

Sure would like to find one of those adapters.

The old style shaft in the picture is bent.

So it needs to be replaced. It may be able to be straightened.

Howard find me an adapter and the old shaft is yours.

It shouldn't be that hard to make one. Expensive, probably.
