H falls out of 4th gear.

Why is it my H falls out of 4th gear? You can put it in 4th but once you let the clutch out it drops out. If you hold it up in gear it will stay there for a 10 foot and finally pushes out. Do I make any sense with explantion?

Probably the gears have lots of wear from grinding the gears, or normal wear because 4th is used pretty often and also some downshifts from 5th to 4th because they don't want to stop with a load of hay or something.

other causes could be a bent fork but if you can't hold it in gear I would say it is the gears

aboout 30 years ago, i worked on one that had a problem like this, don't remember what gear, but what was called the main shaft pilot bearing was bad. this allowed the input and out put shafts to get out of line and gear pressure would push it out of gear.

Either of the two answers given are possible. It is not going to get better without parts. The 4th -5th slider, and the intermediate (pilot) bearing can be replaced with only taking the top cover off and the belly pump out. No split, and no getting into the lay shaft in the bottom of the trans. Jim

Those two are likely scenarios, but I would like to add a third. The springs that hold the balls into the detents were mild steel and didn't see much oil so they rusted through. When I popped the top on my H that was true for 3 of my 6 springs. Needless to say I replaced them all. The only one that was truely junk with 4th, but the others ripped apart or become very deformed when I pulled them out.

You are correct about the fallibility of the detents. They do rust to nothing. He does say however that even if he holds it in gear it works out and stops. I give that a worn drive component probability. I hope it is simple. Jim
