1950 M distributor

When to tune up recently acquired 1950 M and when took off cap noticed it had oil in it. What's with this? The cap even has a small hole in the bottom, Is this normal? or someone's fix? What needs to be done ? Thanks in advance for advice.

Most distributor caps are vented, the hole is NORMAL.

As far as a little oil, it may have simple been overgreased a bit and/or the grease in the gear area can turn to oil after 50 or 60 years. It's POSSIBLE the oil seal ahead of the drive gear has failed, but there's not much oil in the drive area anyhow.

Also, especially in newer stuff without all the drive mechanism ahead of the distributor, oil in the distributor can be a sign of excessive engine blowby or a restricted crankcase ventilation system. I DOUBT that's a problem on your's, though.

Simply wipe it clean and you're good to go.

If you want to do a more thorough cleaning, you can remove the breaker plate, then clean it out with brake cleaner. Then, after it's clean and the brake cleaner has evaporated, lube the centrifugal advance mechanism before putting it back together.

You didn't mention whether you M has a live hydraulic pump ahead of the distributor. If that is the case it may be hydraulic oil from a bad seal in the pump.
