656 Diesel Won't Start?

Ok, I have a 656 diesel tractor that was running yesterday after not running for 5 years or so. So today I replaced fuel filters and put fresh fuel in the tank and now I cannot get it to run. I have cracked the lines going to the injectors and am not getting fuel there. So I cracked the lines coming off of the injection pump and again no fuel there either. I have bled the filters and I am getting fuel to the pump but cannot get it any father. Any help on what to do next would be greatly appreciated.

How much fuel is in the tank? I ran my 656 out of diesel last year, poured 5 gallons in, and never could get it primed until I added more fuel. The 656 relies on gravity to get the fuel from the tank, through the filters and into the injector pump. I think that by adding fuel I increased the head pressure enough to get a good flow of fuel to the pump. Just a suggestion.

As long as the return line is attached pressurizing the tank will make no difference. You will be adding equal amounts of pressure to both inlet and out sides of the pump.

When I rebuilt the engine on my 484 I had to crank on that engine for forever to get the IP primed. Pressure in the fuel tank will probably help. The 484 doesn"t have anyway to prime the injection pump so you just crank on it. Im not sure about a 656.

I know people frown on it but you could give it a small shot of starting fluid.

Is that the 282D engine that was in the 560D? Check to see that the hose from the final filter to the injector is flowing a good stream of fuel for at least a minute or two. That hose has been known to collaspe and show no visible damage. If you have good fuel flow(USE NO ETHER!!!) hook that tractor to another tractor or pickup and pull it around the yard. Should be running in half a mile or so. DO NOT PULL FASTER THAN 10 or 12MPH. IN OTHER WORDS USE COMMON SENSE AND YOU WILL BE FINE! Off the top of my head I would think 4th gear for both tractors. Put TA in direct drive on the 656 and USE NO ETHER!!! Let us know your results on what works. I have done this sever times to save wear and tear on the batteries and starter. Works for me. Armand

Throttle lever at 1/2 to 3/4? my operators manual actually says fully advanced for cold starts.

1/4 or less throttle might be hitting shut off function in pump.
simple but it happens to everyone at least once.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I won't have anyone around to help me pull start it till tomorrow so I'll give that a try. I checked the fuel line and it is fine, with a good stream of fuel coming out. And to answer the other suggestion, I do have the throttle at 3/4 when turning over. I will add more diesel tomorrow and try pulling it and see where that gets me.
