Whats the difference in M's?

I am looking at buying a 12 volt conversion kit to put on to a Stage 2 Super M. All the kits i see say for a M and that they do not fit the Supers. What is different about the Supers that the kits wont work?

Im doing the conversion for a friend and dont have the tractor in front of me right now.

Thanks,

(quoted from post at 09:23:14 03/11/11) not familiar with the supers, What is the Stage I and Stage II?

A Stage I super is a tractor that is just like an M on the outside. A Stage II is a tractor with live power and live hydraulics as well as a battery box under the seat. Those are the big, easy differences.

If the kit has a alternator with internal regulation. Only thing that comes to mind as to why no stage 2 use at the moment, is maybe the wire harness if included.
Battery to ampmeter is off the starter switch on top off the starter on a stage 2 SM. Off the starter switch on rear fuel tank support on others. Ignition switches are located in different spots also.
Wouldn't think that would be the reason though.

Forget the kit. Find a good used, or new alternator, buy some wire and a diode, find the appropriate wiring diagram and have at it.

Slightly bigger engine, higher gearing and something else I can't remember off the top of my head.
Actually as I think of it the engine might be the same size but maybe theres more compression or rotational speed, the Super M made a little more power anyway.
I've got a Stage I, 1952, back when my great uncles were still farming they had it and an M. The M got used to push snow, they claimed that with the lower gearing it was better suited for that job than the Super. The Super M got the bush hog as it was a touch faster and could handle heavier cutting more easily although if the cutting was easy they had an H they'd put on the mower because it was easier on gas.

Thanks for the info, i think im just gonna buy a kit and see how it goes. They come with the alternator and brackets so if i need to change some wiring it wont be too hard. Kits seem to be fairly cheap so not a big deal.

Thnks

Stage 1 SM has more cubic inches of displacement, higher gears in 3rd and 4th, disk brakes, different emblem on the front.

As Rusty said forget the kit. All you need is a piece of 3/8 all-thread. Get an alternator with the built in diode. Takes about an hour if you take a coffee break. :D

Yep, the first, (and only), letter series with live (independent) power take-off was the Super MTA. Some refer to it as a Stage III. Was more like a 400 with M tin.
