farmall M motor question

my farmall M motor is blown up. I have the chance to buy a motor off of a IH 450 gas tractor. the guy is claiming that the motor will fit. If this is true and the motor will fit, will it be too much motor for my rear end and transmission?

The motor will fit, and I might add it makes a nice upgrade. I have been told you need the fly wheel also from the 450 when transplanting to the M. The transplant is quite common among the tractor pullers. Hopefully Jim (janicholson) chimes in on this post, he seems to have all the technical data on hand to fill in the gaps from the other replys.

(quoted from post at 13:54:30 03/10/11) will my cylinder head fit on that 450 gas motor???????? thanks for the help!

Unless your buying a short block I think you would be better off to run the 450 head.
I know the motor will fit, but as stated you need to swap a couple things. You will like it.

the reason i ask is because this motor (the 450) is missing the cylinder head and valve cover. i was hoping that the head off my M would fit?????

If you use the 450 flywheel you will have to get the preasure plate & drive disk from a 450 .Straight m has a smaller clutch.

That's why I asked if it was a short block. IIRC the 450 head will give you more power. I know the 450 lb will, but I think the gas is still better than stock M gas head.

The head will fit. The M will not be able to use the 450 flywheel and its original Liftall belly pump. The reason is that the M had an 11 inch clutch, the 450 has a 12". The tractor will now have the Live hydraulics of a Late SM/SMTA, if you get the pump with the block. I do not see any reason the original M flywheel would not work. Use a good pressure plate and a new driven disk and all is well. Jim

Couldn't you put the 12" clutch in it?

Quite possibly. I am not sure of the starter location and pinion. The M had 2 bolt the 450 three. If the Liftall is all he has for Hydraulics, the Liftall pump would need to be from a SM. It has a cast in recess for the bigger Clutch clearance. (best I remember) Jim

In the early 80s we re built an m to farm & pull with. Took the 264 and built it up to a 281. Rebuilt dis. And put super m carb.on it We advanced the timing 22 degrees and run 2100 rpm under load. You can replace the 11" clutch with a 12" clutch.
