Is it safe to use 90 weight GL-4 in the transmission-differential of a'49 M? This is all that is available in our little cowtown. Thanks.

80-90, 90, or 85-120, 85-140, GL4 GL5 are all perfect. They are so much better than the original oil available that there is no comparison. Do it. Jim

If I remember correct there's some experts that claim GL5 is not as compatible with the bushings in the reverse idler gear and the pto pilot bushing in a M transmission as GL4.

you can evan use hy-tran if it is good enugh for a steiger and magnum it will doo the job in a litle M
just my two cence
have fun and good luck :)

I am concerned about hy-tran and the nonferrous metals in the M transmission and rear end. That is why I posted the question. See the next post.

Exactly, I too, had heard that and that is why I posted the question. It seems that some even question the use to GL-4 in these old tractors. Thanks.

We started using "multi purpose" gear lube over 50 years ago, do not know early GL number but 20 or more years ago it was GL-4 or 5, and a couple of those tractors are still around and running and nothing has melted as far as I know.
